Overview
Chaouen located in the heart of the Rif mountain at an altitude of 610 m. Founded in the 15th century from 1920 to 1956 under a Spanish protectorate, its houses painted in blue and white and its winding streets have a particular charm. The nearby Ras el Ma spring provides abundant water throughout the year. Hand-woven wool blankets and clothing are a specialty of the region. Once in the city, visit the famous Uta el-Hammam square, the Great Mosque with an octagonal minaret, and the Kasbah, its gardens, museum, and art gallery.
